Know How to Take Care of Your System
If your home has a septic system, two things may be true: first, you may not know where it is located on your property, and second, you may not know how it works. This expensive and large part of your home’s plumbing requires maintenance, however. The more you know about it, the better you can prevent septic tank problems and recognize one if an emergency arises.
Although care for septic tanks require trained professionals, the system is a simple one. Located in your yard, this steel or concrete box contains two pipes. One leads into the tank from your home. The other leads out of the tank and into the leachfield (drainfield). The leachfield contains a set of perforated pipes that disperse the clean water into the field, thereby introducing the clear water back into the ground water.

Lighter materials float to the top where they continue to be transformed by the good bacteria. This lighter, unsinkable material is called scum. As a result of the fertilization, nitrogen is produced and escapes via air vents installed into the top of the septic tank.
