How Often Should I Pump My Septic Tank?

Whether it is your first time owning on a property with a septic system, or you just moved into a home that is hooked up to septic, you may be wondering just how frequently your septic tank should be pumped.

Your septic system should be inspected and pumped frequently. According to the EPA,the average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. If you have an alternative system, with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components, these should be inspected more often, generally once a year. In this scenario, it is important to have a service contract since alternative systems have mechanized parts.

Four Major Factors Influence the Frequency of Septic Pumping

  • Household size

  • Total wastewater generated

  • Volume of solids in wastewater

  • Septic tank size

We found a helpful survey created by the University of Minnesota, which can be used to quickly evaluate these factors and advise how often individual septic systems should require maintenance.

Service Provider Coming? Here is What You Need to Know

A septic service provider will inspect your system for leaks and examine the layers of scum and sludge in your septic tank. It is a good practice to keep maintenance records on work performed on your septic system.

Septic tanks include a T-shaped outlet which prevents sludge and scum from leaving the tank and leaking into the drainfield area. Your tank will need to be pumped if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, or if the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the outlet.

Write down the sludge and scum levels reported to you by the septic professional. This will help you keep track of when to pump out your tank.

When Ace Acme visits, we will note any repairs we completed and the condition of your tank in your system’s service report. If repairs are recommended, it is crucial that you make plans to repair the issue soon.
